As a young child (2 yrs- 7 yrs old) a soft hand tooth brush is best. For them the vibration of the electric brush is scary.I never recommend a battery driven toothbrush, they do not clean the teeth and gums well enough . As they get older I would recommend the Oral-B Vitality electric tooth brush. It is half speed (as compared to adult electric brushes) and cleans 20 times better than the hand held brush. An adolescent or adult would need the Oral-B Triumph electric brush. It comes with a floss- aide head and is estimated to be 40 xs better than a hand held brush. Proper technique is to hold it at the tooth-gum junction and move it to the next tooth then the next and so on. Do not scrub horizontally with any brush as it may cause erosions at the gum line. Oral-B has over 90% of the electric tooth brush market and spends a lot of money on research and development. The good thing is their product is top of the line.Although they do not replace flossing or dental check ups, you will see a big difference in your oral condition and lack of dental work needed. Currently you can get these at SAM’S Club or COSCO at a price of 2/ $100. The regular cost is $138 each, so this is a great buy!

Traditional orthodontics has always been taught as a “wait and see” process. By that, I mean to wait until all permanent teeth have erupted and then sort out the crowded mess that has occurred. This often requires four permanent teeth to be removed. Often a “headgear” is used to move the upper front teeth back to close the spaces that remain. This can lead to TMJ problems later since the lower jaw is limited in movement by moving the upper teeth backward.

A better approach is to take advantage of the child’s growing potential early on (6-7 yrs of age) by placing expansion retainers, grow the necessary bone and when permanent tooth is erupted, straighten the teeth with braces (metal, clear, or invisible) without extracting any teeth.

We take a panoramic x-ray of your child at age 6-8 to see if there will be crowding by looking at the developing teeth in the bone on the film. If there is crowding visible, we can make models of the childs mouth and measure how much bone is required. We have used this treatment method for over 29 years with great success. We rarely extracted permanent teeth to treat our cases.

One of the problems with extracting teeth and pulling the front teeth back with head gear is that the child may develope TMJ problems later in life. This happens because the upper front teeth ,when they are brought back, keep the lower jaw from going foreward into its resting zone. This creates strain in the the Jaw joint (TMJ).Very few children have grown up experiencing tmj symptoms using this method of early intervention.. In fact, that is why I got involved with learning this treatment method because I treat tmj problems and found I needed to move the teeth differently from the traditional orthodontic way. If your child is in the 6-8 year old age group you may want to seek out an early intervention orthodontic dentist, like us.

Over 90% of the dentist in the USA today must send your crowns or onlays to a dental laboratory for your crown/onlay to be completed. That is 2 appointments separated by 2-3 weeks. This means you have to be careful with a temporary in between the appointments. We have had Cerec technology in our office for over 5 years now. This new technology allows for your crown/onlay in one appointment. It takes a total of 2-3 hours and you walk out with your finished product ,since you had no temporary, you will not have sensitivity in between appointments.and no lost time for the patients second appointment. Less that 10% of all dentists have Cerec technology available. Not only does the Cerec save time for the patient, the crown is perfect every time. We have noticed less breakage and fewer bite problems since we have used the Cerec. The crown/onlays are all porcelain instead of the old porcelain fused to metal crowns that could have that dark line you have seen. Also, we bond these crowns ( it is “like” superglue but safe for the oral cavity). The old way is to use cement but it will dissolve in time and allow for leakage and new decay formation. Bonding is superior since it is not soluble in saliva and therefore will never leak like cemented restorations tend to do in time. For more information on this technology contact our office at msmith8544@aol.com,gsmithdds@comcast.net,or thru our web site at www.garrysmithdental.com

Dental implants solve many problems associated with removable dentures. They look and feel natural, and restore your self-confidence.

Many people, when asked how their partial or full denture is performing, will say “OK”… even when everything is not “OK.” Unfortunately, they may have lost their frame of reference – they simply don’t remember what it felt like to have natural teeth. They think that their removable teeth are their “cross to bear.”

Be Honest With Yourself

If you’re a partial denture wearer, ask yourself a question: “Would I rather not have to remove my teeth ever again?” Or, if you’re a full denture wearer, “Would I like to have my dentures firmly attached to my jaw, without slipping or sore spots?” Most people answer “Yes.” Dental implants can help you attain these goals, which is why more and more people have become eager to learn about them.

Straight Talk About Dental Implants

If you would like to schedule a consultation to communicate your needs and desires, and to receive a thorough, straight-forward understanding of the benefits of dental implants, please talk to our appointment secretary. The consultation with the Doctor will not be technical. He will show you what is really possible with today’s modern implants and give you the opportunity to reach your goals. Wouldn’t it be great to see your healthy smile in the mirror, and to read a menu without giving a thought to what you can or cannot eat?

Take the First Step

If you are interested in knowing more and to see if you are a candidate for fixed replacement teeth, talk to Dr. Smith. It may be the best thing you have ever done for yourself.

If you are missing a tooth or having to have one removed, an implant is the best choice. There are several reasons. First the implant is stronger than the original tooth by 50%, so chewing strength is added not removed. Secondly, the implant will not decay or fracture as a cemented bridge would. So as a cost comparison, a bridge for 1 missing tooth would be approximately $3300 and 1 implant ,post and crown would be $4400. For the extra benefits ( more strength, won’t decay or fracture) the cost is reasonable.

Implants are made out of titanium . Once the implant is placed and the bone heals around it, a post is placed into the implant and a crown is made to fit over the post. There are three components to what you, the patient, think of as an implant tooth.

Implants are 98% successful. The main reason for failure is gum disease. We do not recommend implants to patients who cannot properly care for their mouth.

We have been using lasers in our office since 1984. Almost everyone has heard of lasers to correct your eye sight, but not many dentists are trained in the use of lasers in the oral cavity (Less than 6% of the dentist world wide) . Lasers have the advantage of requiring no shots ,and quick healing . The best use of lasers is in treating gum disease . The non-laser way to treat gum disease is to use shots to numb the patient, scalpels to cut the tissue, sutures to close the wound and packing material used as an oral bandage. There is usually a 2-4 week recovery period and post operative pain that is managed by prescriptions drugs with this method.

The laser way to treat the gum disease is simply to use the proper power setting without shots, no scalpels, no sutures, no oral bandage and no post-operative pain. The reason is that the laser pulsates so quickly that the tissue and nerve have no chance to fire off a pain impulse. The tissue is simply “melted” away with absolutely no pain. It feels like your tissue is being lightly “sanded”. Healing is quick and without pain. The gum pockets treated with the laser are bacteria free for nearly 90 days so the bodies healing mechanism has no secondary infection to fight.

Another use of lasers that we use is in decay detection. We have a laser that detects decay before you can find it by eye or instrument. We used to have ptients who would come in for a 6 month recall visit and find no decay. The next 6 months when they came in, there was a large cavity. Now that we use this technology, this type of thing rarely happens. The instrument is called a Diagnodent. We use it ,so should your dentist. Sometimes I have “stck’ in a tooth ,only to use the Diagnodent and find in was a groove only and not decay. So it prevented me form doing an unnecessary procedure. You can see more about this and other technologies at my web site, www.garrysmithdental.com.

We have all had decay that was fixed by using the dental drill. This requires shots and the 2-4 hours afterward for the “wearing off” process. Air abrasion was brought into dentistry in the late 1980’s by the same people who invented the dental laser. The concept is that the powder that is used “dusts away” the decay (which is soft) and does not cut the tooth unless it is applied to hard tooth structure for a longer length of time. The object is to only remove the soft decay. No shots are required unless your teeth are sensitive to air. We can do teeth in all 4 quadrants in one visit and save the patient the time they would lose in making multiple appointments. The powder tastes like chalk and is rinsed out easily and quickly. Your bite is easy to check since you are not numb. It is easy to use on children, in fact, they think it tickles and often laugh while we are working on them. Any adult that has had shots loves this option.

The air abrasion will not cut metal or porcelain and cannot be used to take out old mercury fillings or old crowns. The air abrasion instrument that we use is called the KCP 1000. It is being used in less than 10% of dental practices world wide. We have been using it since 1989. Its perfect mate is an instrument called a diagnodent which is a special laser used to detect decay that is not yet visible to the naked eye. Using the diagnodent to detect the decay early and using the air abrasion to restore the decay avoids the shots that so many people fear.

The intra-oral camera is very helpful in letting the patient see what we see without trying to look into a small mirror. The intra-oral camera picture is shone on a 17 in .screen and can be magnified several times to get even a closer look. You will be able to see cracks ,chips ,etc in the restorations. Often when they fail by cracking or chipping they do not hurt yet because the decay hasn’t started or isn’t big enough to warn you. We also use the intra-oral camera to document to the insurance company what the problem is that we are fixing, especially if the x-ray doesn’t show the problem. We don’t use it on every patient, but you may request us to use it on you to better show you what we are seeing. It does not replace the use of x-rays since the insurance industry does not recognize the intra-oral camera as an x-ray replacement. So x-rays are still required in all cases where insurance coverage in needed.

WE use lasers to detect decay, sterilize the preparations and to treat gum disease. All of these procedures can be done without shots in your mouth and are pain free.

In an effort to treat real decay and not “it may be decay”, we have been using a special laser for several years now that actually tells us if the dark area is decay or stain. We have had patients from our office and other offices checked with the Diagnodent laser and found that what looks like decay was not decay but only stain. We have also found unseen decay ( before it is visible) and were able to restore the defect without destroying a lot of good tooth structure.

Another way we use lasers is when we work in an infected area, we can use the laser to sterilize the tooth or tissue for up to 90 days. This allows your body to heal itself without bacterial involvement. This can be especially useful in root canals that have a lot of infection. It is also very helpful in patients canker sores. We expose the affected area for 2 minutes at a specified power setting and the organism is destroyed. The cold sore will not return in that area again.

When you have gum disease, we use the laser in the gum pockets that do not respond to scaling and cleaning therapy. Again, no shots,no scalpel and no pain. You can eat after the laser treatment for periodontal disease.

For the last many years, if you had a broken tooth that needed a crown, you would need 2 appointments and a temporary appointment to prepare the tooth ,then 2 weeks for the lab to make the crown and another appointment to cement the crown. This would mean you have to take off of work 2 times and be you numbed to deliver the crown. Now we can do the whole procedure in one office visit. So the crown is delivered while you are still numb, so no doscomfort in the bonding process.

How it is Done:

After your tooth is prepared, it is scanned with an electronic camera that allows you to see the image on a video screen. The restoration is designed from this scan and then automatically milled from a solid ceramic block. This is accomplished precisely so that it can be accurately fitted and durably bonded to the prepared cavity.

Perfect Harmony:

CEREC restorations are made from ceramic – a natural substance that is particularly compatible with the body. The CEREC ceramic has the same characteristics as normal, healthy dental enamel. This means it is similarly hard wearing – for example when undergoing the daily grinding of food, and is not affected by hot or cold, like coffee or ice cream.

Furthermore, the ceramic is so smooth that bacteria do not stand a chance at attatching themselves to it.

And you will not experience a strange metallic taste or suffer effects from electric currents, which can be created when two different metals are located in neighboring teeth.

Natural Color:

Self-confidence and inner composure: these are things we would all like to have. But many people suffer with a blemished appearance, often due to their teeth. CEREC restorations will brighten up your life as your self-confidence is restored. We are able to use ceramic materials that match your natural teeth in color and appearance, so that your repaired teeth appear as originals. If your tooth color needs corrected, this material also comes in a more opaque form for hiding the unwanted tooth shade.

If you plan to have restorative work, you may want to whiten first so that your new crowns and restorations match your whitened teeth. The process is simple and you’ll be happy with the difference.
Conservation:

CEREC restorations are almost as strong as dental enamel – the hardest of all materials in the human body. This strength and durability comes from the ceramic material and also the very careful bonding of the restoration to the tooth.

Yet this is not enough:

We always try to conserve as much of the original dental material as possible. The CEREC method is ideal for this. A CEREC restoration, bonded firmly and durably, gives your teeth great stability. This means that we can frequently dispense with the need to have a full crown. This has been proven time and time again for over a decade, in restorations all over the world.
